A DISTINCTIVE FIN PHENOTYPE

What is a
Rose Tail Betta?

A Rose Tail Betta is an ornamental phenotype developed through selective breeding, distinguished by dense, highly branched caudal-fin rays and a ruffled tail appearance.

At AF Plakad Thai, the program begins with carefully selected Halfmoon males and females. Broad caudal fins, increased fin density, strong ray branching, and balanced tail development guide the selection of breeding stock.

Color intensity, pattern quality, body balance, and overall vitality are considered together with fin structure. The aim is to refine the Rose Tail expression while maintaining healthy body structure, strong coloration, and breeding quality.

THE BREEDING JOURNAL

From Halfmoon.
Toward Rose Tail.

Controlled mating. Observable traits.
Selection across generations.

Our multi-generational development program combines phenotypic selection with strategic outcrossing. At each stage, breeding candidates are evaluated for visible fin structure, coloration, and overall form.

  1. F1FOUNDATION

    Begin with considered pairings.

Selected Halfmoon males and females establish the foundation, with attention to healthy body structure, balanced finnage, and desirable form. Their offspring primarily show the Halfmoon phenotype.

Individuals with unusually dense caudal fins, stronger ray branching, and fuller tails are identified. 10 pairs — 10 males and 10 females — are retained for the next generation.

Selection focus / Halfmoon form → fin density → stronger branching

  2. F2DIVERSIFICATION

Refine the tail. Broaden the line.

The 10 selected F1 pairs are bred under controlled conditions. Among their offspring, a greater proportion begins to show denser caudal fins and increased ray branching.

5 males with the strongest tail-development characteristics are selected. 5 females from unrelated external bloodlines are introduced for strong coloration, healthy morphology, and complementary finnage. This controlled outcrossing broadens the breeding gene pool.

Selection focus / Tail density + color diversity + genetic variation

  3. F3INTENSIVE SELECTION

    Bring the desired traits together.

10 males and 10 females are selected for controlled pairings. Males are evaluated for high caudal-fin density and branching, a broad and balanced tail, attractive coloration, and healthy body conformation. Females are selected for similarly desirable traits, particularly dense finnage, strong color, and good morphology.

Only individuals expressing the desired combination of fin structure, coloration, symmetry, and vitality are retained for further development.

Selection focus / Fin structure + color + symmetry + vitality

  4. F4ROSE TAIL EXPRESSION

A more developed Rose Tail phenotype.

Offspring are evaluated for highly branched caudal-fin rays, increased fin density, broad tail spread, balanced finnage, attractive coloration, and strong body structure.

Individuals consistently expressing this combination represent the most developed form of the line: a Rose Tail Betta with dense, highly branched, ruffled caudal finnage and enhanced coloration.

This F1–F4 pathway describes the AF Plakad Thai program. It is not a guarantee that every pairing will produce the same outcome on a fixed generational schedule.

A CLOSER UNDERSTANDING

Rose Tail,
answered.

What is a Rose Tail Betta?

A Rose Tail Betta is an ornamental fin phenotype developed through selective breeding. Its caudal fin has dense, highly branched rays and a ruffled appearance. AF Plakad Thai develops this phenotype from selected Halfmoon breeding stock.

How does AF Plakad Thai develop its Rose Tail line?

The farm describes a multi-generational program from F1 to F4: Halfmoon foundation selection, increased fin density, controlled outcrossing, intensive selection, and evaluation of the Rose Tail phenotype.

Why introduce females from unrelated bloodlines?

In the F2 stage described by AF Plakad Thai, five unrelated females are introduced to broaden genetic variation and improve coloration. They are selected for strong color, healthy morphology, and complementary finnage.

Is selection based only on the tail?

No. AF Plakad Thai also evaluates coloration, pattern quality, body balance, symmetry, healthy body structure, and overall vitality alongside fin density and branching.

Does every Halfmoon pairing produce Rose Tail offspring by F4?

The F1–F4 sequence describes AF Plakad Thai’s breeding pathway, not a guaranteed outcome for every pairing. Breeding candidates are evaluated and selected for observable traits in each generation.
